note that the general-purpose solution to this problem (you want a
program to seem to be a user at a tty) is to use expect or programs
like it (possibly even "chat", but there are definitely things like
Expect.pm for perl, as well as the original tcl-based expect).

you can do it manually if you like, but the intricacies of setting up
ptys is best done once and then forgotten about.  :)
