The equivalent function for SuSE seems to be startproc:

       startproc [-f] [[-n ]+/-<prio>] [-s] [-t  sec]  [-u  user]
       [-g  group]  [-v]  [-e]  [-l  log_file|-q]  [-p  pid_file]
       /path/to/executable [arguments for executable]
