Nice idea, i have to admit i really enjoyed following this thread.
( reading it during a 'strategic project planning' meeting ;-)
BTW, i don't consider these things off-topic -- for me Linux and
open source have a lot to do with the way software problems are 
approached. Development within a large, geographically widespread
group often seems to naturally enforce good coding habits.
