Yes, the above looks wrong.  I get:

  [daggett ~]: cat /etc/redhat-release
  Fedora Core release 6 (Zod)
  [daggett ~]: echo $LANG
  [daggett ~]: echo abc | grep "[A-Z]"
  [daggett ~]: export LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
  [daggett ~]: echo abc | grep "[A-Z]"
  [daggett ~]: echo $LANG

so perhaps you should file a bug in the SLES bugzilla.
