How about:

1) put ssh keys everywhere, then write an Expect script to change the files from root only, sftp them, then ssh over and change them back?

2) do the copy with Rsync? (Don't know this'd work, but Rsync has so many options, there oughta be something...)

3) switch to Debian (sniff)
